Trek Itinerary
Maromokotro is Madagascar’s highest mountain, with a summit elevation of 2,876 meters above sea level. It is located in the Tsaratanana Massif in the northern part of the island. The summit is not easily accessible; it is remote and can only be reached on foot across savannah, dense forest, and a high plateau. This tour usually takes 15 days.
Beautiful camping spots, traditional Malagasy villages, clean rivers, and breathtaking wildlife are just some of the wonders that await you. This tour is only for experienced hikers in very good health. It is an expedition at your own risk, and the overnight stays are without any comforts, with bush toilets and washing facilities in rivers and streams. All food must be carried by the porters.

This trekking tour will satisfy your need for challenge and adventure in Madagascar. You will climb Madagascar’s highest peak, Maromokotro.
At the foot of Tsaratanana, you will surely encounter endemic animals such as lemurs, amphibians, reptiles, and birds, and see interesting flora. The sources of five large rivers and waterfalls are also located here. Be prepared to take photos of unforgettable moments and to interact with the local population and their everyday life. We take fresh and healthy food with us for the entire trip. The trek is classified as moderately difficult.
– This is a special hike to the summit of Maromokotro, but it
does not require any special technical skills.
– However, you must be an experienced hiker in very good physical condition, as the daily stages involve up to 10 hours of trekking.
Personal trekking equipment is required (trekking shoes, warm and functional clothing, sleeping bag, tent, etc.).
Most of the porters come from the villages of Andoharano.
We recommend packing the following clothing and items for this tour:
Large backpack – 60L or larger as your main backpack
Daypack – for your daily needs on the trek
Waterproof bags to pack your luggage, if necessary
Sturdy hiking boots with spare laces
Sandals – for river crossings and relaxing in the evening
Socks – enough pairs (you can have your laundry done in Bekopaka)
Long shirts and tops – for hiking in the sun!
Lightweight trekking pants (possibly ones where you can remove the legs with zippers (zip off)
Possibly shorts (if you don’t have long pants with removable legs (zip off))
Comfortable underwear and clothes for relaxing in the evening
Warm sweater/fleece – evenings in the mountains can be cold!
Swimsuit/dress
Waterproof jacket – (optional: waterproof pants)

Exchanging money into currencies other than euros and withdrawing money with credit cards can be difficult in Nosy Be or Ambanja. It is best to bring cash.
Season
The best season for this tour is August to November, for two reasons:
-The rivers are low
-The temperatures are better (not too cold)
