Drive to Ankarana (meaning “sharp stone”), a protected nature reserve. There you can admire the unique limestone formations known as “tsingy” in the Malagasy language, as well as several caves where you can see stalactites, stalagmites, and bats. Hike of about three to four hours.
Similar to the Tsingy de Bemaraha and Namoroka, it is an eroded limestone plateau where wind and weather have formed needle-sharp rock peaks. Some of the valleys formed, some of which are deep, are cut off from the outside world and are traversed by streams that often disappear into underground cave systems, for example in the hole known as “Perte de rivière.” These streams can dry up in the dry season and quickly swell into rivers in the rainy season.

You can also spot mouse lemurs, boas, and various bird species there. Then continue to Ambanja, a small town with wide avenues and spacious gardens. The cocoa and spice plantations in the surrounding area are also important employers. Optionally, for a small extra charge, you can visit a spice plantation on the way and, if booked in advance, have lunch there. After arrival, there is an opportunity to explore the town.
