You can also discover mouse lemurs, boas, and various bird species there. Continue to the small town of Joffreville, southwest of Diego Suarez, which was founded by the French Foreign Legion in 1950 and developed into a resort for exhausted Foreign Legionnaires in the cool mountain air. Since the mid-1990s, the village has been filled with life: it serves as a starting point for visiting the 18,200-hectare Montagne d’Ambre National Park, home to seven species of lemurs, over 70 species of birds, and 24 species of amphibians. The park also includes several waterfalls up to 80 meters high, several rivers, and crater lakes.

After breakfast, visit the Montagne d’Ambre National Park, then drive south. On the way, visit the Tsingy Rouge, weather permitting (red laterite soil with beautiful crystal formations). Then drive to Ankarana (meaning “sharp stone”), a protected nature reserve. There you can admire the unique limestone formations known as “Tsingy” in the Malagasy language, as well as several caves where you can see stalactites, stalagmites, and bats. Hike of about three to four hours.
Similar to the Tsingy de Bemaraha and Namoroka, it is an eroded limestone plateau where wind and weather have formed needle-sharp rock peaks. Some of the valleys formed, some of which are deep, are cut off from the outside world and are traversed by streams that often disappear into underground cave systems, for example in the hole called “Perte de rivière.” These streams can dry up in the dry season and quickly swell into rivers in the rainy season. Picnic lunch.
Overnight stay at Ankarana Lodge or similar.

Excursion to explore this reserve on a hike lasting several hours. If the spectacular landscape isn’t reason enough to visit the Tsingy du Nord, as it is also known, you will find an interesting flora and fauna here. Eleven species of lemurs live here, including the rare aye-aye. Picnic lunch.

Departure after breakfast to Ankify, a small village on the beach, then transfer by boat to the island of Nosy Be. On the way, we pass the long, pretty town of Ambilobe on the Mahavavy River. Much of Madagascar’s sugar cane harvest is grown in the fields around the town and processed in a nearby factory, some of it into rum. The cocoa and spice plantations in this area are also an important source of employment. Ferries depart from Ankify to Nosy Be. However, due to often high waves, they are not allowed to sail to the perfume island with its tropical picture-book landscape in the afternoon. Upon arrival in Nosy Be, transfer by car to the hotel.

Overnight stay at Hotel Anjiamarango or similar.

Free days. Optional extra: mini-cruise to Nosy Komba, a small neighboring island where you can see lemurs (female black lemurs are brown, males are jet black). Vanilla is also grown there. A 622-meter-high volcano can be climbed. There are no roads or cars here… Then continue to the small island of Nosy Tany Kely with its underwater reserve (since 2011, a 200-hectare national marine park), a snorkeling paradise rich in various fish species, starfish, crabs, corals, and numerous types of algae. The water around this island is clear and mostly calm. A picnic on the beach can be served on request. Return to Nosy Be.

Or take a trip to the Lokobe Reserve to discover a rainforest with lemurs and other animals on a jungle hike lasting several hours.

Or to Mount Passot, the highest peak on the island at 329 meters, where you can admire the surrounding lakes and islands as well as the sunset.
